Academic Field School The “Study in Africa” Academic Field School is offered under special arrangement with Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda. However, most of the lectures and field work are actually carried out as we travel on an amazing, well supervised safari throughout southern Uganda and throughout Kenya. The Field School begins in Limuru, Kenya, where students receive information on safety, cultures, basic swahili and safari camp procedures. Students will then travel to Uganda and the beautiful campus at Makerere University where they will be officially welcomed and provided with a campus orientation. Students have a great time mingling with Ugandan university students on this tropical campus while registration is carried out and student cards are issued. Coursework continues as we travel to some of the most exciting sites in Uganda, visiting National Parks and key research areas. In the Field School, all courses are presented by selected faculty members at Makerere University as well as invited instructors from Canadian institutions. Each instructor is a recognized expert in their field. All academic requirements are met in order to ensure transfer credit to home universities.
All courses offered on our field school safari are enhanced by daily exposure to the lifestyles of East African peoples, by site visits to illustrate course concepts, and by exciting safari travel to see unbelievable scenes of landscape and wildlife. During the academic program you can spend time in both the open savanna of the Western Rift in Uganda and the Great Rift Valley in Kenya where the ancestors of modern man roamed. These locations provide an unforgettable backdrop for students to learn about sustainable development and wildlife conservation.
The academic field school ends on the Kenyan coast where the warm Indian Ocean and rich coral reefs allow our students to literally immerse themselves in the Marine Biology course and our extensive SCUBA diving program. Our time on the coast also gives the program participants an opportunity to contribute to marine conservation goals.
A semester in East Africa will enhance your undergraduate academic experience in more ways than you can imagine. Many former students have gone on to graduate school, medical school, and international development positions based almost entirely on their experience on the Study in Africa Program. It reinvigorates a passion for learning in many of it's participants, and develops a sense of adventure and love for travelling in all. Please view the rest of our website for more information regarding the Study in Africa Program. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us. We look forward to hearing from you and hope to see you on safari with us next year! Dr. Brian Hartwick
