Academic Safari Options for 2011

This is a semester long program including lectures, laboratory work and field exercises in East Africa. The Field School is designed to provide university credit courses while exposing students to the broad diversity of East African environments, wildlife, peoples and cultures. Students in the Field School will enjoy small classes, direct contact with professors and the excitement of site visits in areas of active faculty research.

Students will arrive in Nairobi in January and will be picked up by our passenger trucks and driven to our large compound located on a tea plantation near Limuru, Kenya. At the compound, students will meet our Kenyan staff and will be given talks on cultural differences and respect, travel, safety and security, basic Swahili, and camping procedures. The academic program will be introduced and courses started. Students will also have a chance to purchase field guides to birds and mammals of East Africa if they want.

The Field School will then travel across the Rift Valley into western Kenya where we will camp at the Kip Keino training facility for Kenyan Olympic runners. We will then cross the border into southern Uganda making our way to Kampala for registration and orientation at Makerere University.

REGULAR PROGRAM [January 14 to March 24]
