Frequently Asked Questions (Academic Program) 1. When is the deadline for application? The deadline for early application to the Study in Africa Program is September 1st. However, we will continue to accept applications up until December 15th as long as there is space available. We recommend students apply as soon as they can as applicants are selected on a “first come, first serve” basis. Early applicants also have priority for registering in courses. 2. Do I have to apply to the host university, or can I just apply to the Study in Africa program? The Study in Africa Program is now being hosted by Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda. Registration for courses will occur when the group arrives in East Africa. There is no need for students to apply seperately to Makerere University. 3. How many people apply? How many are accepted? The majority of applicants are accepted. Applicants must show reasonable, consistent academic performance and their character references must indicate that they are able and willing to work within groups. The size of the group varies with each year, but typically the student population ranges from 14 to 30. 4. Are courses on the trip worth university credit? The credits earned while on the field school are transferable to most North American post-secondary institutions. However, we recommend students check with their home institutions to make sure. Most students will require a letter of permission from their department. 5. Is the $1000 deposit refundable? The $1000 deposit is refundable until the second payment is made for the program. The second payment date is usually November 15th of the year preceeding the safari. 6. How many courses should I take while on the field school? Students should try balancing their academic load so they have more time to appreciate the African experience. Please refer to the course schedule to select your courses. 7. Are there Study in Africa field schools during the summer or fall semesters? No. The field school runs only during the spring semester, from January to March. We plan to run it every year, but any one offering may be canceled because of safety or logistical reasons. 8. How much does the program cost? The tentative cost of the 2011 program is $11,500 US. This cost cannot be paid for by credit card. We strongly recommend that all cheques and applications be sent by courier or express post. 9. What does the cost include? See Fees 10. What financial aid is available?Unfortunately there is no financial aid available from the program for our students. Many students receive bursaries from their home institutions or scholarships from community organizations. 11. Can I use my credit card while in Africa? Visa and Mastercard are widely used in large stores and hotels but most small stores will require cash for purchases. Participants should be cautious when using their card, as credit card fraud is not uncommon in Africa. Cash advances can be obtained on Visa or Mastercard from banks and cash machines accept most out of country debit cards. Using a bank machine gives the best exchange rate and is very convenient. 12. Do I need to fly out of Vancouver? No, you can depart from the most convenient major city. Each participant organizes their own flights to and from Africa for the start and end dates of the safari. 13. Is there any way of contacting home while I'm on the trip? While in Africa, participants can communicate with their friends and family by mail, telephone and e-mail. However, we are often in the field.
Yes, please contact us directly for updates on the status of your application. 15. How do I get transcripts sent to my home institution after I'm finished the program? As with other institutions, there is a charge for transcripts to be sent to your home university. Each student must submit a request to Makerere University and they will be sent directly. If you have other questions, please email us!
